What is Gunpowder Green Tea?

Many teas have names based on the plant that is grown to produce it. Others are named after the region where the tea originated. But gunpowder tea is named after the way it looks and tastes.

Gunpowder tea has a unique production method. To make the highest quality gunpowder tea, artisans wither, steam, roll, and dry individual tea leaves. Machine rolled gunpowder tea is also available (and quite common) although not as highly revered. This tea is sometimes called pearl tea or bead tea based on the shape of each tiny tea pellet. Some people also call it Chinese gunpowder tea.

When you steep a cup of gunpowder tea, each individual leaf unrolls or "explodes" as some would describe. The tea has a taste that many describe as lightly smoky—as the name indicates.

Some people blend gunpowder tea with other types of tea to create unique flavors. For example, gunpowder tea combined with spearmint tea creates a well-known blend called Moroccan mint tea.

Advantages of Gunpowder Green Tea

Now that you know what gunpowder tea is, we can start to look at its benefits. There are many different health benefits. However, keep in mind that long-term research is still being completed.

1

Stronger Immune System
Studies have shown that gunpowder green tea can protect you against colds. This is the case for most green teas. One study showed that people who drink green tea are less likely to get sick.
Additionally, it showed that green tea drinkers have more of the cells that fight viruses.

2

Healthier Heart
Drinking green tea can reduce your risk of heart disease. If you have high levels of triglycerides or cholesterol, you could be at risk for heart disease.
Gunpowder green tea lowers the levels of these substances. Hence, your artery walls will be stronger. Damage to the arteries causes heart attacks and strokes. Thus, drinking green tea can help prevent these events.

3

Managing Diabetes
Studies have shown that some of the compounds found in gunpowder green tea can help with diabetes management. The catechins and alkaloids in the tea can help manage blood sugar levels.
So, by managing the blood sugar, gunpowder green tea can regulate insulin levels. By doing so, it can help those with diabetes manage the condition. In addition, it can also help those who have a high risk of diabetes from developing it.

4

Live a Longer Life
A study in Japan looked at green tea consumption and lifespan. The people who had the longest lifespan drank over 5 cups of green tea per day.
This may be a little bit excessive, as the caffeine content is no longer healthy. However, it was concluded that drinking 2-3 cups of green tea per day can help to increase your lifespan.

5

Digestion
There are catechins in all types of green tea. These can help reduce inflammation throughout the body. So, gunpowder green tea can reduce digestive problems.
This is because most digestive issues involve inflammation around or in the stomach. Some of these conditions include constipation, bloating, or even Crohn's disease. A cup of green tea can help if you suffer from any of the conditions.

6

Chronic Diseases
This type of green tea can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases. These are things like heart disease, cancer, or Alzheimer's. There are antioxidants in all green teas.
When these are paired with the active ingredients in gunpowder green tea, it can prevent these chronic diseases.

7

More Energy
It is well known that most green teas contain caffeine. However, gunpowder green tea contains more caffeine than any other kind of green tea. This is because the tightly rolled up leaves keep more caffeine.
As a result, the tea provides a good boost of energy. In addition, it provides an alternative to coffee. This is good for those who do not like the acidity of coffee.

8

Weight Loss
There are three ingredients in gunpowder tea that help with weight loss. The first is quite well known. This would be caffeine. The others, catechins and theanine, are less known.
When these three compounds work together, they can significantly boost your metabolism. This helps the body burn more fat. In addition, caffeine can help to suppress your appetite. This could also help you lose weight.

Gunpowder Green Tea: The Smoky Chinese Tea That Unfurls When Brewing

Flavor Profile of Gunpowder Green Tea
Gunpowder green tea is more flavorful than other green teas and maintains its robust taste for longer than other loose teas. That's because the tightly rolled pinhead pellets seal in fragrance and flavor by minimizing contact of the leaf surface with the air.
This green tea is also characterized by a smoky flavor that is enhanced through the pan-fired drying process. The smokiness permeates the air as the tea leaves gently unfurl and infuse in hot water. This green tea also contains a higher caffeine content compared to other green teas, though it is still less caffeinated than matcha green tea.

How to Brew Gunpowder Green Tea
Preheat your teapot and teacup. Fill them with hot water, swirl the water around, and then discard the hot water in the sink.
Scoop one teaspoon of Cup & Leaf Gunpowder Green Tea into a tea strainer.
Heat water to 160 degrees Fahrenheit and pour into a teacup or teapot.
Place the tea strainer with the tea leaves in the hot water. Steep for 2 to 3 minutes. The longer the steeping time, the stronger the flavors.
Remove the strainer and enjoy!

Enjoy Fuller Flavor With Gunpowder Green Tea
Add this smoky Chinese green tea to your wishlist and see why it's one of our favorite teas. The gunpowder tea leaves are also packed with health benefits thanks to the high concentration of antioxidants and minerals, making it a delicious and healthy beverage choice. For the best flavor, look for high-quality tea from reputable companies and stick to organic or Fair Trade products. See what all the hype is about and brew some gunpowder green tea in your favorite teacup.

Gunpowder tea, or pearl tea, is a type of loose leaf tea where the leaves are rolled into tight balls. The tiny pellets look similar in appearance to small gunpowder pellets, hence the name. Most types of tea can be made into gunpowder tea including oolong tea, black tea, white tea, and pu-erh tea as well as herbal tisanes such as Moroccan mint tea and jasmine tea.

Varieties of Gunpowder Green Tea

There are several varieties of Gunpowder Green Tea. The most famous are:
Pingshui Gunpowder Tea: Featuring large pearls, a stronger smell, and a deeper color, Pingshui Gunpowder Tea is the original Gunpowder Tea and the most common version. Also called Pinhead Gunpowder, this tea has higher levels of caffeine than other green teas. I personally enjoy Pingshui Gunpowder Tea after lunch. It helps avoid the afternoon slump!
Formosa Gunpowder: Grown in Taiwan, Formosa Gunpowder is known for its steamed leaves, memorable fragrance, and dark green color. The tea has a distinct flavor that leaves you wanting more. So, boil some extra water in the tea kettle!
Ceylon Gunpowder: Ceylon Gunpowder comes from Sri Lanka, but the production process is similar to Chinese varieties. The tea is usually grown at high altitudes (5,000 – 6,500 feet above sea level).
Some other types of tea are rolled ‘gunpowder' style, such as premium Jasmine teas. This is done to help preserve freshness and enhance the flavor.

How to Make Gunpowder Green Tea

First, gather the ingredients and equipment. You'll need:
A teapot or a tea kettle
Gunpowder Tea leaves
Teacups or tea mugs
Note: You can buy loose-leaf Gunpowder Tea and use a tea strainer. This way, your leaves are in the cup when you're drinking. Or, you could buy Gunpowder Tea that's packaged in tea bags, like what Davidson's Tea offers.

You make Gunpowder Tea like you would any other tea. Follow this process:
Bring water to a boil in your tea kettle or pot.
Add 1-2 teaspoons of Gunpowder Tea pellets per serving. For instance, if your teapot has 24 ounces of water, add 3-6 teaspoons of tea leaves.
Allow the tea leaves to steep for a few minutes.
Pour the tea into a cup, being sure to strain the tea leaves.
If you have tea bags, then pour the boiling water into the cup with the tea bag. Let the Gunpowder Tea steep for a few minutes. Then, remove the bag and drink.

That's about all it takes. If you want an even more authentic experience, use a gaiwan tea set. A gaiwan is a traditional Chinese teacup. It's essentially a lidded ceramic bowl and its use dates back to the Ming Dynasty.

Can You Reuse Gunpowder Green Tea?

Another name for gunpowder tea is pearl tea, and no matter which term you prefer, tea lovers appreciate its smoky, nearly oaken flavor. While some may describe the taste as minty, peppery, or grassy, all agree on its coppery kick and unforgettable flavor profile.

How to make gunpowder tea
Chinese green teas in general are easier to brew than their Japanese counterparts. Although all such infusions must occur below 212 degrees Fahrenheit (the boiling point of water), Chinese teas are typically less fussy about their exact thermal reading. To arrive at the ideal temperature for gunpowder tea, boil water in a tea kettle and let it cool for two minutes or so until it reaches about 175 degrees Fahrenheit.

Gunpowder tea in a teacup or teapot?
While Westerners will normally brew gunpowder in a teapot, the Chinese often steep theirs in an 8-ounce glass or lidded cup. Either way, it's best to use a vessel made of porcelain or glass, with a ratio of just under one teaspoonful of pellets per four ounces of water. Be careful not to use too many pellets, as gunpowder is quite a bit stronger than other green teas.

Brewing gunpowder leaves in a glass
For this older method, warm the heat resistant glass with a swirl of hot water while letting the water in your kettle cool for two minutes. Add just under 2 teaspoonfuls of loose gunpowder pellets to a POOM glass, fill it nearly to the top with water from the kettle, and steep for 60 seconds.

Brewing gunpowder leaves in a glass teapot
This simple method returns a slightly more mellow steep and requires nothing more complicated than a glass teapot and set of cups. For each serving, boil 8 ounces of water in a teakettle. While you wait the two minutes for it to cool, preheat your teapot with a small amount of scalding water and add just under 2 teaspoonfuls of pellets for each 8-ounce serving.

Now, pour the water from the kettle into the teapot and enjoy the show as the gunpowder pellets burst into life and dance around the pot. Just remember to pour the tea after 45-60 seconds regardless of whether the pellets have finished performing.

Reusing gunpowder tea
Gunpowder tea is so strong and long-lasting that most gunpowder pellets are good for up to five infusions. Just add 30 seconds to your steeping time for each successive brew in order to bring out its optimal flavor.

Tips for modifications
If you find your tea to be too weak, you can add additional pellets or increase the brewing time. Conversely, if it seems too strong, add water to taste for now, and use fewer pellets or brew for a shorter period in the future. If your tea is too bitter, your water was too hot, so shorten the time you take to heat it and consider using a thermometer to ensure a perfect 175 degrees Fahrenheit. A little experimentation can go a long way, resulting in the cup of gunpowder tea that suits you best.
